One small town, two protests, frustrations.

Welcome to Durango, a small tourist town in the four corners region of Colorado. This time of year the city is usually bustiling after a great ski season. Tourist’s would flood in to town for the famous Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. A scenic railroad that runs along the Animas River through the San Juan Mountains.

The towns small businesses should be open and their owners happy, but that is what it would look like without a global pandemic. Many businesses are suffering and some locals want an end to the city’s shut down.

Here is a video I took of the small rally held by locals to reopen

We were driving through town when I noticed a group of people holding American flags standing in the parking lot of the railroad. I asked my dad to pull over and see what was happening, he agreed. I stood there to see what was happening, then I realized it was a protest against the shut down over Covid. People were fed up with not being allowed to have there business at a certain capacity, others were tired of having to change the way they live in general. Here is my interview with a local leader Lew Webb.

That was not the only protest in Durango that night. Others were protesting the death of George Floyd at Buckley Park. I spoke with locals outraged over the death of George Floyd, a black man who died in police custody in Minneapolis, Minnesota. If you read my post about Denver you will probably see a big city with protests turning intense. That didn’t happen in the small town of Durango. Here are some of my interviews with those protesting police brutality.

So next a protester wearing a Trump shirt who was there to protest the shut down came up to a protester and touched his mask telling him to shut up so she could say black lives matter. Which was … interesting. Black lives Matter protesters asked her to leave and lead them out of the park. I found it interesting that they were told to leave a public park, but what was more odd was that she touched his face. That stirred things up. Here is my interview with the man that was touched by the Trump supporter.

So what do you think of this small town protest versus the big city protest in Denver? Let me know!
