A Classic Rivalry Delivers Again: Oklahoma’s Last-Second Stunner Over No. 1 Texas

By Phoenix Rising (Phoenix Legg)

The Cotton Bowl in Dallas has seen more than a century of Red River Rivalry games, and on October 10, 2026, it delivered another chapter that fans on both sides will talk about for years. Unranked Oklahoma upset No. 1 Texas 27-24 on a 47-yard field goal by Tate Sandell as time expired.

It was the kind of finish that makes this matchup special. The Sooners trailed for much of the day and struggled to move the ball, but they found ways to stay in it — a blocked punt returned for a touchdown, a defensive score on a pick-six by Peyton Bowen, and then the late drive that set up Sandell’s winner. Texas and quarterback Arch Manning had the better of the statistics and led for most of the afternoon, but the final seconds belonged to Oklahoma.

What stands out beyond the final score is the atmosphere. Half the stadium in crimson, half in burnt orange. Generations of families packed into the same building. Alumni who have watched this game for decades sitting next to students experiencing it for the first time. Rivalries like this one don’t just measure which team is better on a given Saturday — they show how deeply sports can still bring people together, even when they are rooting against each other. I speak with experience. As a life long Sooner fan, nothing is better than taking in this game with a Texas fan. Especially when the game turns out like this one did!

Of the many events I have covered across the country, few things capture American passion like college football…especially games like this one. The intensity is real. The history is real. And somehow, after all the trash talk and the tension, most people still walk out of the Cotton Bowl knowing they were part of something bigger than the result.

Oklahoma got the win and the Golden Hat this time. Texas will look to answer next year. That’s how rivalries work. They keep going. Until next year, BOOMER!
